Feeling overwhelmed by your child’s anxious behaviors?
Worried about your child’s avoidance behaviors and that they miss out on things they may enjoy doing?
Feeling your personal boundaries impacted by the accommodations you make to reduce your child’s distress?
SPACE treatment might be what you need!
SPACE - Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
Parent-based treatment program designed to help children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, OCD, and related difficulties—without requiring the child to directly participate in therapy.
Developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE is backed by strong research and has been proven effective in clinical trials.
SPACE is effective for treating:
Separation anxiety
Social anxiety
Generalized anxiety
Fears and phobias
Panic disorder and agoraphobia
Selective mutism
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
How SPACE works:
In SPACE, parents—not children—are the agents of change. Parents learn tools to support their child in managing anxiety by making two key changes in their own behavior:
Increasing supportive responses to their child’s anxiety
Reducing accommodations (things parents do to prevent or minimize the child’s distress)
These strategies help children build resilience and confidence, without pressure or confrontation. Because of this parent-led approach, SPACE is effective even when children are unwilling or unable to participate in traditional therapy.
